Wetherby 7 : Pontefract 19. Two tries for Josh Milthorpe

A great start to the season
- Steve Hough - Club Chair

Pontefract started the season with a hard earned victory against newly promoted opponents, who were full of confidence. Defences were on top early on as Ponte went through the phases well without troubling the home defence too much.

It was Wetherby’s first foray into Ponte territory that brought the opening score. Ponte’s pack were put under scrum pressure forcing an infringement and a penalty try. The home lead nearly increased as desperate, try saving, cover defence stopped the home winger in the corner.

Ponte cleared their lines and went on the attack. Speedster Josh Milthorpe was tackled into touch following a break but Ponte didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough. Big Bailly Matthews was tackled just short but the pressure paid off as Milthorpe glided through for a try converted by Alfie Abbott. Seven all at half time.

The second half started well as Ponte took the lead in fine style. Great approach work allowed Abbott to float out a wonderful pass to Milthorpe coming on at pace for his second of the game.

The try to seal the game soon came as Abbott fielded a deep kick and used his pace to put Lucas Ketteridge away for a thrilling score under the posts.

For the remainder of the game Ponte threw everything at their hosts in the search for a bonus point try but all chances were repelled by excellent defence. Besides the aforementioned players, there were some fine performances, with centre Andy Coleman showing how much he was missed last season.

Will Cooke also played well in his unaccustomed position of fly half. In the forwards it was good to see returning props Tyler Smith and Steve Anderson excel whilst new captain Brodie Matthews lead from the front magnificently. Special mention also to promising debutants Josh Beddis and Kieran Thornton who both added some quality off the bench.

The 2nd XV lost to Wetherby in an entertaining encounter. The fell behind early after a slow start and despite a sterling effort including a great try by debutante Sean Simpson they could not quite get back on equal terms.

Next week the 1st XV entertain Doncaster Phoenix at home on Saturday (3pm kick off.) Tables for the pre match lunch are available. Please contact chair@pontefractrufc.com if you would like to dine with us.
