Alfie gets in first
Pontefract Rugby Club’s hugely successful junior section has produced another two Yorkshire colts, Ethan Grant and Alfie Abbot, who represented their county at the under 18 age-grade at the weekend. Each young man combines courage and tact, being play-makers at half-back, playing at scrum-half and fly-half respectively. They took to the field on Sunday against a Northumbria XV when spoils were shared after an open and competitive game which ended in a draw, 24 points each.
Ethan Grant, 18 years, is a former pupil of The King’s School, now studying at Bishop Burton College and hopes to go to university next year. He is the latest of the Grant family to play at Pontefract, where his father, a former captain, an uncle and their fathers are remembered as outstanding players.
Alfie Abbot, an apprentice electrical engineer, is also a former pupil of The King’s School where he was encouraged to play rugby by his PE teacher and the Club’s current head coach, Craig Fawcett. ‘He has an instinctive talent for rugby and reads the game well. He’s dedicated and, if he continues to train hard, will mature into an incredible senior player’.
Both young men are popular with members throughout the Club. When they’re not playing, they can be seen training or helping out in the back-office operations of the Club. Its an exciting time of their lives and we wish them both the very best for their future.
