After a couple of disappointing performances aggravated by injuries, Pontefract travelled to Hunslet hoping for better luck . They were faced by a Hunslet team with a large pack and young speedy back line but they quickly showed their intent to play some running rugby. The developing partnership of Greensmith and Abbott made sure that the Pontefract backs had the chance to run at the opposition. Cam Burgess and Elliot Stephens made some telling runs and after 10 minutes Elliot fed Burgess who crashed over in the corner to open the scoring. Abbott slotted the conversion from out wide, ,score 0- 7 to Pontefract.
A number of penalties allowed Hunslet to use their bigger pack to drive up the middle of the field putting Pontefract under pressure but good defence kept them out and with Ludwig , Jex , and Dec Lewis holding their own in the scrums and veteran Andy Lund bossing the line outs, got their fair share of the ball and were always looking to play quick ball rugby . Toby Ludwig and Lucas Kettridge went close, but could not quite force their way over the line but when Hunslet were caught offside from a ruck, Abbott added an easy penalty to take the score to 0-10.
Hunslet continued to stick to their game plan by using the big men to run the ball in sucking in Pontefract defenders and pressure finally told as their number 8 forced his way over for a converted try 7-10. Shortly after, the Hunslet scrum half made a good break and his grubber kick was chased down by their right wing to score out wide. The try was not converted and the half time score 12 -10 to Hunslet.
After an extended half time break due to a Hunslet injury both teams stuck to their game plans but Pontefract began to nullify the Hunslet attack plan with some stout defence . The introduction of Jack Beddis at number 8 gave Pontefract more punch and when he broke from a ruck he ran through the remaining Hunslet defence for an unconverted touch down,, score 12 – 15 . Pontefract then suffered a number of penalties against them which gave Hunslet the chance to pressure the Pontefract line but a turn over at a ruck allowed centre Billy Coleman a charge to produce a storming tackle-breaking run.. He was eventually stopped on the Hunslet 22 yard line but found support from Abbott who weaved through the Hunslet cover to score near the posts for a try which he converted, 12 -22 to Pontefract . Shortly after, Beddis put the result beyond doubt when he broke from the base of the scrum to score another converted try, 12- 29.
Right on the last minute of the game a kick through was chased down by the Hunslet right wing to score a converted try , the final score was 19 to 29 in Pontefract's favour.
The seconds hope they can continue this form as their next few games are at home.
