Ponte’s solid start to the season continued with a hard-fought victory against traditional tough opponents from Halifax.
The game started well for Ponte with centre Andy Coleman and number eight Jack Beddis going close before hooker for the day Josh Stuart picked and drove his way over, well converted from out wide by Liam Kay.
It took a fantastic cover tackle from Will Cooke to save a try, but Ponte soon extended their lead with young prop Tom Webley squeezing over in the corner following a sixty-metre break by winger Sam Gilbert.
Any thoughts that Ponte were in for a comfortable afternoon don’t know the history of this fixture and Crocs came battling back with three tries including a length of the field interception. Two were converted to leave the score nineteen points to twelve at half time.
Ponte started the second half well and pressure on the Crocs line allowed winger Lucas Ketteridge to scoot over for a converted try to level the scores. This was followed by a long-range Kay penalty to nudge ahead.
The match and final bonus point was secured soon after, as the forwards set up a platform for Kay to put Cooke under the posts with a perfectly executed set play. Crocs threw the kitchen sink at Ponte, but the swarming defence was excellent to see the game out.
The forwards worked well as a team with Beddis leading from the front and Shaun Simpson carrying well, whilst in the backs, centres Andy Coleman and Cooke were solid with Kay orchestrating superbly.
This weekend the 1st XV entertain Goole at home. 2:15pm kick off.
