Pontefract 29 - Goole 17. Five Point Win in front of a big crowd

A fine weekend for Ponte
- Steve Hough

In front of a large crowd, including many of the club sponsors, Ponte gained maximum points against a team who have shown a marked improvement in recent weeks.

Following a minutes applause in memory of club legend John Kaye, Ponte got off to the perfect start as the power of the pack proved too much for the visitors for a catch and drive try from prop Tom Webley, expertly converted from wide out by Liam Kay. Goole hit the post with a long-range penalty and Ponte were held up over the line as the game went end to end.

Ponte soon added another try as young Webley sold a dummy and made a break before offloading to speedster Josh Milthorpe for a try under the posts. Goole were in no mood to lie down and poor discipline from Ponte allowed Goole the territory to score a brace of tries for a two-point advantage to Ponte at half time.

Ponte looked the livelier after the restart and this time it was poor Goole’s turn to give away penalties which resulted in constant pressure and a converted try, as Kay found centre Will Cooke running a superb angle to the line.

Once again Goole hit back with another catch and drive try which made it a four-point game going into the last quarter. A Kay penalty gave Ponte a cushion, but it was then a case of whether Ponte could score a bonus point fourth try. There was no need to worry, as Josh Milthorpe displayed his amazing pace to chase a long Kay kick and score a try, he had no right to.

So, it was another pleasing victory and performance with Webley given the man of the match, with numerous other candidates not far behind. The 2nd XV also scored a 26:17 win against Goole away to cap off a fine weekend for Ponte.

Unfortunately Bucko was unavailable this week, but the photo of Tom Webley is taken from last weeks game.
