Rochdale have been the most consistent side in the league, and came to Moor Lane full of confidence, as they sat 10 points clear at the top of the table. They were also seeking revenge for their defeat at home by Pontefract earlier in the season. Right from the kick off they showed exactly how they can play with a sweeping move only thwarted by a last ditch tackle which prevented them from scoring.
After that it was Pontefract’s turn. They gained territory with some elusive running and scrum dominance. This put pressure on the Rochdale winger who kicked out of defence direct to Linden Metcalfe, who showed his own speed by making the break, chipping the ball over the top of the fullback and regathering for an amazing score in the corner. It was a great try, but unfortunately Kay hit the post with his conversion attempt.
Further enterprising play by Ponte followed with backs led by the elusive Josh Millthorpe attacking and forwards battering the line, but the Rochdale defence was up to the task. Ponte had a two penalty shots at goal, and Kay landed the first to make it 8:0, but his second attempt drifted wide.
The Rochdale forwards started to gain ground, and inched up the park. This gave them field position to score under the posts after a cheeky kick from the scrum half was gathered by the centre for a try. The conversion looked like a formality, but the kick was charged down denying the extra points.
The second half was an epic encounter. Two good teams were going at it in a full blooded encounter. Pontefract threw everything at Rochdale but once again their defence was resolute. In turn the visitors played some entertaining rugby, and pressured Ponte into giving away a penalty which was converted making the score 8:8. Soon after another Rochdale penalty attempt sailed wide of the posts to maintain the stalemate. This was broken however when the classy Rochdale backs managed to get over in the corner to take the lead for the first time 8:13.
The to and fro continued with exciting play by both teams. Ponte battered the line for the last ten minutes but could not find that elusive score, and so the game ended with Rochdale running out narrow winners. Steve Anderson, Brodie Matthews, Tad Nyanjowa and Joe Knox all put in big performances up front. In the backs Tom Greensmith had an excellent game at scrum half and was very supported by Liam Kay, Sam Gilbert, Lucas Ketteridge and Will Cooke. In truth all the team played very well, and the bumper home crowd, including our loyal sponsors could have no complaints.
Barring some very unlikely scenarios Rochdale will be crowned deserved champions, and we wish them well for next season as they make the big step up to Level 5.
The 2nd XV also entertained Ilkley at home on Saturday. Some very good performances could not prevent a loss against one of the best teams in the league.
Another week off now and then only two more league games for Pontefract. We make the trip to Scarborough and then entertain one of the form teams in Wetherby on April 5th. With rugby of this quality being played you will not want to miss either game.
